MUTKU, the Finnish Society for Soil Investigation and Remediation was established in the summer of 2001 to enhance the exchange and spreading of information concerning the clean-up of contaminated areas. The aim of the society is to develop and advance the operation and practices in Finland and to enhance the dialogue concerning contaminated areas. The society also wants to increase the professional skills of people working in this sector, to be a link between people and societies working with tasks related to this field, and to inform outsiders about matters concerning contaminated areas.

In Finland contaminated land and groundwater is also a problem of concern. The investigation and remediation of these areas is a developing sector in soil protection and environmental protection technology. Many kinds of people and organisations are working with contaminated land, e.g. land owners, authorities, consulting and remediation companies, environmental researchers and environmental laboratories. In addition people are living, working and protecting the environment in neighbourhoods of contaminated areas.

To accomplish its aims, the society arranges seminars, excursions and debate events. The society operates independently and the members represent among others authorities, economic life, research and educational institutions and land owners. All individual persons, companies and societies interested in contaminated areas are welcome to join the MUTKU society.
